Days of distress
Punctuated with moments of joy
As the world keeps spinning
And you wonder why it didn’t pick you up on its way around
When the teller of time
Became the memorized narration of pop culture
And text took the place of a voice and a brain
When smiles meant nothing
Each became masked behind a laugh.
And “I Love You” became hello and goodbye
All wrapped in one
No strings attached.
When sadness was the expectation
And hope the reason to believe.
When Cinderella was a movie
That you watched as a child
As your head filled with joy
Over things that would never be.
When your “best friend” stabbed your back
And love was a whisper that echoed
Somewhere far in the distance
When the clock read 11:11
And a wish, a hope, a desperate plea
Were sent out to the world
Hoping upon all hopes
That someone somewhere was listening.
When one single tear fell down your cheek
As you watched the years pass you by
And you sat there wondering when they would stop
And pick you up
And let you along for the ride.
